Importance of social media for news consumption

By now most of us are aware of the devastation and havoc currently taking place in Mumbai. You may have learned many of the details through the myriad of social media channels currently available. Here are some samples:
Second by second updates from people on the ground are surging in on Twitter, Al Jazeera’s English news site has created a Google Maps feed where people are able to follow the events. Wikipedia’s site is being rapidly updated, well ahead of mainstream media. First-hand reports are pouring in on blogs. Google Spreadsheets has a page dedicated to the dead and injured and the Flickr community is providing grim illustrations As I waded through the mass of information, I felt much closer to the terror those stuck in Mumbai are facing. This is a compelling example of how social media is transforming the media landscape, and news coverage in particular.
